Study finds Acne Medications Could Worsen Effects of Celiac Disease

A new study published in the journal Nature finds that the side effects of Accutane and Retin-A (both acne medications) could worsen the effects of celiac disease. 

The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago's Digestive Disease Research Core Center, found that Vitamin A and retinoic acids caused an inflammatory response in patients with higher than normal levels of interleukin-15, which is known to cause digestive problems when consuming foods containing gluten (wheat, rye and barley).

Cephalon May Spend Up to $22 Million on Celiac Drug

Check out this great article from Bloomberg News about an announcement from biopharmaceutical company Cephalon that it may spend more than $22 million as part of a purchase for rights to a medication to treat celiac disease. 

Under the deal, Cephalon will pay Alba Therapeutics--the developer of the drug--$7 million upfront and provide a credit line to fund a mid-stage clinical trial. After the study's final report, Cephalon will decide whether to move forward with the purchase.

University of Chicago Publishes Article with New Discoveries in Cause of Celiac Disease

Breaking Celiac News!! The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center this week announced that its team of researchers has made exciting new discoveries in understanding the root causes of celiac disease. 

The most recent paper, titled "Co-adjuvant effects of retinoic acid and IL-15 induce inflammatory immunity to dietary antigens" is published in the Feburary 9 issue of the journal Nature. The lead researcher was Dr. Bana Jabri.

Study Finds Improved Celiac Tests Do Not Change Mortality Risks

Despite the growth in better serological testing for diagnosing celiac disease, a new study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology finds that these new tests have had no impact on mortality.

For the study, a team of researchers from the University of Nottingham evaluated data on 1,092 patients who were diagnosed with celiac in the late 1950s onward through 2006 and tracked them for at least two years. During the course of the study, there were 142 deaths. 

The researchers found that patients diagnosed in the 21st century had similar mortality risks when compared with those dianosed earlier, regardless of the introduction of serologiacal screeing. Additionally, the researchers said they found that people with celiac disease had a 37 percent increase in all-cause mortality when compared with the general population. Deaths from cancers were increased, as were deaths from digestive and respiratory diseases.

Canadians, Patient Advocacy Groups Rally for Food Labeling Regulations

In response to hard hitting lobbying efforts by the brewing industry to get special treatment under a a new food labeling law, Canadians and their leading patient advocacy groups are rallying the Prime Minister to stick to the original labeling plan.
